Car quit while jumping friends car. won't start Sign In

I hooked up my 98 Ford Contour to my friends civic to jump her car (her lights were left on). I let my car idle and charge hers for a couple minutes. Then I let my car idle while I turned her ignition and my car killed. I thought it might have killed my battery because it is old and dying and I have been putting off buying a new one.

I tried starting my car and nothing happened when I turned my ignition. My roommate got his car and we tried to jump my car and it was unresponsive (no cranking or anything) when I turned the key. I purchased a new battery thinking it might just be dead.

Now when I turn the key, the car makes normal seat belt ding noise, and two dash lights come on but when i move past the on position to the start position the ding noise goes flat (like it is low on power) and nothing else happens. When I take the key out of the ignition the dash lights (seat belt light and one other one) stay on which is really odd to me. The head lights and inside dome light don't come on when i switch them on. I don't see any blown fuses. Did I miss some?

Any suggestions on how to start finding the problem. Thanks.

Have you checked the main fuses under the hood?
Also check all connections from the battery as in where the positive cables connect to the power distribution box; the negative cable where it attaches to the engine block and the body.
What may have happened is that the heavy draw from trying to boost the Civic, finished off a cable, a connection or fuse that was ready to fail and couldn’t handle the draw.
