CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

Vehicle is 2000 with D16Y8 engine @266K and 5 speed transmission. I recently posted about this vehicle, but I think this current problem is different enough that I don't think I'm breaking any forum rules by creating a new post. This week the vehicle was taken to a smog station for California emission testing and was told that the check engine light itself was not functioning. There has been a myriad of issues with this vehicle with the CEL activating many times, and I thought I had all the issues solved having monitored it carefully with a good quality scanner until all the codes and monitors cleared. I was dumfounded that I hadn't even noticed lately that the CEL wasn't lit when the key was in the run position (an automatic smog test failure). I took the dash apart and replaced the tiny bulb to no avail. I plugged the bulb into other spots, (like the high beam) and it works fine. I don't see any fuse listed for the CEL itself. All the other dash lights in the cluster work fine. What could this be? Any help I could get with this would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Re: CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

? About all vehicles when you turn key to plain "run" without it running (don't go to start area") all dash lights will light up - a bulb check.

If one or more doesn't usually bulb or how it's mounted probably a circuit board.

So if it's out but bulb works is now why? Simple power and ground bulbs work.

That one can and will disallow inspections in many places thru OBDII port will read can't communicate or a not ready of all places Calif. the first and toughest I'm in the second, MA!

Back to the why question? Do you ever recall it working since you've owned it? That was something to play with to sell used cars to hide some lurking issue to sell the car. Just that is now old doesn't work for inspections. It would in other places right now.

I didn't know (can't follow this by the hour) if CA even let standard shift cars be registered and driven in CA? Lots of things weren't long before this model year.

IDK so the place should have suggested and or printed out what you can do with the results you got. If not look it up with CA DMV site I fear it may have been altered to not work to sell the thing?? Tom

The CEL light does have a fuse.

It's fuse #25 in the dash box 7.5A

Re: CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

Yes Tom, the CEL was functional up until recently. In fact, I believe it was on when we purchased the vehicle a few years back. I've had a bunch of Code P505 issues that I thought I had solved(because of the codes and monitors being clear). When the technician said the CEL was burned out I immediately thought it was due to the CEL being on so many times, or I thought that made sense. I was obviously heartbroken after working so hard to get that code P505 code to clear(which I traced to a collapsed PCV hose). All the other dash lights(brake, oil, battery, ect..)work when the key is in the run position before starting. I just didn't realize during that brief time between doing that work and taking it to the smog shop. What could be the cause of this? The light bulb is fine. Do I need to replace the cluster? Is there any way I can test the port that the CEL bulb goes to? I always appreciate the help I get here.

Any advice on what to do about this? I haven't checked that fuse yet, but is there any reason to when the other cluster lights work? Do you think that the circuit for the CEL bulb is faulty(the light was on a bunch of times, including long stretches of time)? In which case the whole dash cluster must be replaced, I would think. Can I test it? Thanks for your help.

Re: CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

Why are you asking all these questions when you haven't even checked the fuse that supplies power to that bulb?

Don't you think this would be the very obvious first thing to look at?

Re: CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

I'm sorry for that. I did a bit of research, but I didn't know about fuse #25 until I saw you mention that(and I was fixated somewhat on the bulb). That is why this forum is so valuable to guys like me. I admit I don't have a lot of knowledge. I didn't know(but I should have)that there was a specific fuse until you mentioned it. I thought there was a fuse for the dash cluster, not the specific light bulbs. Just lack of knowledge on my part. I just checked it(#25), and fuse is not blown. Thanks for the help. I will gratefully keep following the advice I get from the experienced guys like yourself.

Re: CEL Not Working 2000 Honda Civic Sign In

You can't merely look at the fuse. You have to test for power at both ends of the fuse with a test light. There is a little test slot at the top of both ends or the fuse to stick the pointed end of a test light in. If you do have power at both end, then you are going to have to tract the power through the cluster circuit board.

Just be absolutely sure you have power actually leaving the fuse.
