Blown Battery in 1991 Dodge Caravan

Blown Battery in 1991 Dodge Caravan

A friend tried to jump a dead battery and ended up blowing up something. Smoke started coming out of (I believe) the box to the right of the battery. When I went and bought a new battery and attached the cable it immediately started smoking. I'm more than annoyed, needless to say but I have to fix it.
Can you guys help me figure out what went wrong and how to fix it? And I pray to God that I can.
Thanks so much for any advice.

This is a 1991 Dodge Caravan, 6 cylander engine. Gas fuel.

All I can say from this end is too start disconnecting things from around whatever has burnt or where the smoke is coming from? There are no specific test procedures for this; it’s more of a search and rescue type of repair. Disconnect something and try the battery if the smoke stops you’re on the right track; being very careful not to burn the whole van to the ground. Follow the battery positive wires from the battery to this “box” looking for anyone of them that is burnt and or touching anything metal (ground); it may also be melted inside a device or wiring harness that a positive circuit is touching a ground.
If you could post a few picture of what is smoking and what kind of mess you’re into that may help us to help you.

 hi anne before anything safety first get eye protection,and gloves,if your a smoker donot smoke anywhere near the car while youre working on it ,work in well ventilated area.trace your steps check the old battery for cracks and acid corrotion check the pos and neg whires also for damage if necessasy disconnect the new battery and remove and inspect the box that you said smoke was comming out of when ypu open it smell it if it smells burnt replace it.the best thing to do is trace the whole electrical battery system.i hope this can help you. if not go to google and just type in my battery has blown during a boost maybe your freind made a mistake during the hook up obviously there was a short somewhere.if you coud post more info this time get your freind remember everything he did during the hook up.peace

Israel, thank you for your reply. Here's the story: My friend gave me a jump from his Acura which he should have "grounded" on the car frame. Instead, he hooked up both cables and it blew. I suspect it is the processor, since that is where the smoke is coming from. There is also a very corroded wire. I am uploading two pictures but cannot find a way in photo shop to label the problems as I see them. Tell me if you see what I see or what you see the problems to be. I see 1) smoke coming from the processor (battery_blow_up2.jpg) and 2) a really corroded cable (battery_blow_up.jpg) ).  I've tried to highlight the problem areas with lighter contrast shading.

hi anne from what i saw in the photos there was a lot of battery acid all over now with all respect to you i dont know how mecanically inclined you are but you can start by cleaning that whitish residue off get some rubber gloves,goggles and disconnect the neg whire first then the pos check all posible components for smell and damage ,make shure all your fuses are ok and all wires are free of corrosion or any other obvious damage that you can see.if you start your car while having all these doubts you may cause more damage however you still have the option to have someone check it out for you .i hope to christ this may help you .here are some websites that are very educational in respects to automotive repair and automotive electrical/electronics that have helped me a ton www.autoshop101.com,www.cdxetexbook.com i hope this will help you aswell as others that view this.most high in christ bless you.peace.israel
