Not quite sure what you mean by "up" to the red. Is that telling you it's overcharging?? Or undercharging??
Either will cause problems so I would get a separate meter and read the output of the alternator. It would be odd if a replacement alternator had the same problems unless your old one was "rebuilt" and perhaps the problem stayed with it, T
