Battery Charging/ Alternator Issues

I have a 2002 3.0L V6 Ford Escape. A couple of months ago I began having battery charging issues. After having the alternator tested at a few local auto repair stores I decided that the alternator needed replaced. I replaced the alternator and everything seemed fine, and it was.... for a few weeks.
Recently the car has died completely while driving down the road. The battery is completely dead and I've had to recharge the battery just to get the vehicle home. Clearly the alternator is not charging the battery as I'm driving.
I've had the new alternator tested and I'm told that it is fine. I've tested the voltage at the battery with the car off, idling and @ 3,000 RPMs with my own millimeter . With the car off the battery sits around 12.3V, idling or revved usually produces around 14.2V; so clearly the alternator is doing something. Although, at times I have tested the alternator with the car running and only read around 12.3V. I've replaced the ground wire on the vehicle and as far as I can tell everything is wired correctly.
Do I need to get another alternator, or are these issues caused by a deeper problem? Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Test for power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key OFF.
