Battery Charge Light

The battery charge light on my 1983 Toyota Pickup (22r) will not turn off, even when the ignition is off and there is no key in it. What could this be a sign of? Any ideas?

With the ignition turned off, do you have power at the gauges fuse? If you pull the fuse, does the charging lamp go out?

I pulled all the fuses and checked them from the box under the stearing wheel. All of the are good and the light stayed on on each one pulled.

Has there been any wiring modifications or any after market equipment installed. If you pull the gauges fuse, the charge indicator shouldn't come on. That would mean you have some sort of short to power in the gauges circuit.

?? Have seen this a couple times with no wiring alterations to be ruled out as DS suggested. Dang if I'm totally unsure of what fixed the problem that wasn't destined to be mine to chase down so just some WAGuessing.
TMK this alternator set up is about the same back to MY 1970! Externanally regulated.
1st WAG: Alternator itself can send on an icon or battery/charge warning without a total failure from inside itself. Check plug right on back for any clues right there and at regulator.
Alt plug in.........
Top left plug is what may be the issue??
WAG II: Look right at battery for acid corrosion. OE back when battery and replacements along the way should have had caps to fill and could make quite a mess like others but more wiring to mess up. Battery itself must be clean. Test if dirty or damp with a plain OHM meter if there's any draw from one terminal to any spot not quite touching the other - sounds nuts (all agree I'm sure) but you may find it drawing/draining power on itself.
Just some thoughts - sorry I can't recall any exact one shot fix for that,

The few times i've run into this, its always been a bad diode inside the alternator.
