99 toyota tacoma starting problem

99 toyota tacoma 2.7L auto. Every so often when I go to start this beast all i get is a click. If I keep trying with a little time space between each turn of the key, she will finally start and actually have sufficient cranking power. This is why I dont think it is the battery, besides the battery is less than a year old. This only happens about 3 or maybe 4 time a month - just enough to scare the ---- out of you thinking this is the time it will not start. Not sure what's going on, and just do not want to go out and replace starter as I am being told they can only verify or trace problem is when it fails.
