99 Buick Century Replace Relay

Hi, I'm having a problem with the A/C on my 1999 Buick Century. The fan will blow when on high but not on any of the lower settings. I was told it is a relay. I was able to open the relay box under the hood, but not remove any of the relays. Do I need to disconnect something first or should I just try using pliers? (I was afraid to pull too hard and break something!) I found the schematic in my manual, although I'm still not sure exactly which relay runs the low fan, and there are no instructions on how to remove a relay. Also, do I need to disconnect the battery before attempting to replace a relay? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don’t think you’re going to find the relay/resistor you’re looking for in the under hood relay/fuse center. If the problem with your blower motor is the common one that a lot of GM’s have it’ll be under the dash close to where the blower motor is mounted on the heater/AC box.
Check the fuse for low speed fan operation; it’s a 20-amp fuse in the in-dash fuse panel and should be labeled “low blower fuse” before you go and get a new resistor/relay assembly.
If the fuse is ok go and get the new relay assembly and that will help you find where yours is under the dash. Only a portion of it is visible when it’s installed so don’t be looking for a little square box like what you would find under the hood in the relay center.
Here’s a diagram showing the heater box and the relay, resistor or the module; all these are the same things depending on whose terminology your using.
As for disconnecting it as long as the ignition switch is off you shouldn’t have a problem. This relay is also bolted to the heater box and it can be a bit tight to get to one of the bolts; it’s kind of covered by the firewall insulation.

This diagram is a bit deceiving to see the blower motor and resistor you’ll have to lay on your back on the passengers floor and look strait up to see what is pictured. This is after you’ve remover the sound deadening cover at the base of the dash.
