98 lumina runs great/nest morning misfiring bad idle? Sign In

I have 98 Chevy Lumina 3.1 100k mi, that sat for several years and decided to get it running again. it has 80k miles. I removed the plugs, put about two table spoons of motor oil in each cylinder, and turned the engine over for about sixty seconds to pump oil into the the bearings by turning over the engine with the starter. Replaced with new plugs. high performance platinums in back three and regular new AC Delco spark plugs in front 3(since the back three are so hard to access. Replaced plug wires and motor oil and filter, Flushed radiator and replaced anti freeze. removed nd replaced fuel pump and fuel filter.

Car had a little difficult starting but purred like a kitten once it started. it continued to have a little difficulty starting but once it started it ran very well. Although I normally use 87 octane, i added premium, drove 20 minutes and had good acceleration. I parked it and the next morning it had a very hard time starting.

Finally got it to start it was missing misfiring a great deal. service engine flashing? Auto zone read the codes to mean multiple misfire.

Please help.

Actually that isn't unheard of. Ford did that. They would put single platinums on the positive side of the waste spark system and double platinums on the negative firing side. They did that because on waste spark systems the plugs would wear out faster on the side where the spark jumps from the ground strap to the electrode.

I don't think the OP knew this and was just thinking about the rears being harder to change out, but don't be surprised to see some waste spark systems with different combination of plugs installed from the factory.

Give me a specific engine if you're going to say something like that.

Never in my life have I seen any engine call for different plugs in different cylinders.

For example...look up 1997 Ford F150 4.2L spark plug application.

Right Side Original Spark Plug ..................................... AWSF-42EG
Left Side Original Spark Plug ....................................... AWSF-42E
Replacement Spark Plug (Either Side) ................................ AWSF42EE

Here's another for a 1999 Ford F150 4.6L

RH Original Spark Plug .......................................... AWSF32PG (a)
LH Original Spark Plug ........................................... AWSF32P (a)

Replacement Spark Plug (Either Side) ............................ AWSF32PP (a)

The AWSF-42EGare special ground enhanced plugs that I don't know if it can even be bought in the aftermarket and certainly shouldn't be replaced with standard Delco copper as done here.

I agree. I think that Ford did that to save money or maybe so the plugs have the same wear. Who knows.

It isn't something I would do on the OPs vehicle though. I'd never stick coppers on a waste spark system. It might run fine for a period of time, but the plug will eventually cause problems.

Not to mention they will burn entirely differently in the 2 banks.

Sounds stupid huh....well since I had used this practice for a few years prior to letting it set unused for a while, I didn't think much of it. I would replace the front three plugs twice as often as the platinum and all the plug wires and it would run good again?

I thought that it sitting might have made it more sensitive to the disparity so after reading how dunb I am for doing so, I went and replaced the front three with platinums. in removing the front three the had a great deal of black on the(carbon) for only about an hour of total use. One was wet with a gas. After replacing the front three... there is no change in how poorly it runs and misfires? No change

You can't simply ignore 3 plugs.

Okay Hammertime...I get it. no change so now that we have that out of the way...no change...anyother things I may consider that would make it purr once again?

When you replaced the fuel pump and filter, did you drain the tank and clean it out? Have you checked for good spark on the front three. The spark should be able to jump 3/4 inch air gap.

Re: 98 lumina runs great/nest morning misfiring bad idle? Sign In

yes I dropped the tank and drained the old gas, washed and scrubbed the inside of the gas tank with detergent and water. Scubbed with rags and brush as far as i could reach. let it completely dry in the sun for two days.

I checked the front plugs spark where wire connects to the coil pack and at the plugs. yes remember I switched the front plugs to platinum. serious spark at 1"+. still rough. ?

Probably going to need to do some enhanced diagnostics using a scan tool that can read data stream information.

Going to need to monitor:
O2 sensor voltage
Long and Short term fuel trim
Injector pulse width
MAF sensor frequency
ECT voltage
Misfire counters

The information should give you a picture of what is going on, so you know where to look.

One other thing you could check for is a leaking fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off the regulator and see if there is fuel leaking out of the nipple.

Here is a Danner video on checking the regulator for leaks:

Re: 98 lumina runs great/nest morning misfiring bad idle? Sign In

I did check and forgot to mention the fuel pressure regulator.

One thing I just tried a few minutes ago is the the plug harness that connects to the top of what I think is the air intake modulator (what the large rubber duct connects to.)

I had the car running when I was checking the sparks earlier. I disconnected this plug and the car made no change. I reconnected it gunned the engine with and without it plugged in, and there was no notable change? Is this normal?

ps new air filter.

Yea I ws trying to avoid all the diagnoztics ...since it was running great one moment and bad the next. I think I am going to check the fuel filter and pump again. Thanks for the advice. It seems like maybe a timing type sensor might have gone bad...? Ill keep trying Thanks Again
