98 Taurus, power windows/locks wont work Sign In

1998 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 V6

I have a 98 Taurus and the power windows/locks don't work. I cant figure out why. Fuses 27 and 33 are fine. Relay 39 seems to be fine and relay 34 gets pretty hot, but doesn't seem to be the problem, either. I switched it out with relay 35 to test it and there was no difference. I tried testing the relay 34 outlet with multimeter, but couldn't get a reading. It is really dark under there, though. May have done it wrong.

Just to clarify, none of the windows or locks even try to work. At all. When I got the car, someone had disabled them both to try and solve a battery problem, but I cant figure out how they did it..

The door locks circuit isn't protected by fuses. They are protected by a circuit breaker. Do the door locks operate with the remote? Does this have any aftermarket equipment installed?

No, the door locks don't opperate via remote either. There's also no aftermarket equiptment on this car whatsoever save for a pair of subs. Where might I find this circuit breaker??

The 30 amp breaker is in the fuse panel under the hood in position 4.

For the windows:

Pull the driver's door master control panel out and check the light blue/black wire for battery voltage with the ignition turned on. Also make sure all the connectors are plugged into the panel. Someone may have disabled the windows by pulling the connectors from the switch.

Just checked the door panel. Everything seems to be hooked in just fine. There's no power running through that light blue/black wire, though.

Remove the breaker from the fuse panel. Use your test lamp or meter and check for battery voltage inside the circuit breaker cavity. One terminal inside the breaker cavity should have battery voltage.

Do you hear the warning chime when you have the key in the ignition with the door open? Does the seat belt indicator light up if you have the engine running without your seat belt on?

The door open chime goes off constantly in my car unless the key is in the ignition and turned on. Then it stops. And I believe the seat blet light works for the driver seat but not the passenger.

The seat belt indicator coming on and the chime operating is a good indicator the GEM is up and running. The GEM is basically a body control computer. The GEM controls a relay called ASD (accessory delay relay) to allow power to the power window and moon roof systems. The door locks happen to be on a separate circuit than the windows.

You still need to check for power in the circuit breaker cavity position 4. One side of the cavity where the breaker plugs in should have battery voltage. The other side goes to the lock and unlock relays. You should have continuity ( zero ohms) across the terminals of the circuit breaker itself. Let us know if you have power in the cavity or not, so we can isolate the problem with the door lock system first.

Re: 98 Taurus, power windows/locks wont work Sign In

The locks aren't my main concern, I'd really rather have the windows functional. I'm also no sure where the circuit breaker cavity is located?

I went and checked the voltage at all my fuses today and most of them checked out just fine. Fuse #33 in the interior box(power windows), however, only reads 4V instead of 12V. I'm not really sure what might cause that. I tried switching out my PCM relay, but it didn't do anything.

P.Ss. sry about the delay in reply. I've been without internet for some time now.

Re: 98 Taurus, power windows/locks wont work Sign In

You need to find connector C502 and check for power there by back probing both sides of the connector (if possible) with your volt meter. With the ignition on, you should see battery voltage at light blue/black wire. C502 is a 56 pin inline connector. Light blue/black is in position 52 in the middle of the connector. The connector is located in the left front door jamb.

There should be battery voltage at fuse 33 5 amp when the ignition is on and the accessory delay relay is energized. You could have resistance in the circuit causing a voltage drop. You would have to load the circuit so there is current running through it, so you can check the voltage drop. Loading the circuit with an old sealed beam headlamp on high beam lamp puts a decent load in the circuit and should pull over 5 amps. Your also going to need a wiring schematic, so you know where to check for drops.

Curious, but how did you test relay #39 and found it was good?

How do you know this? You can't ask them?

The backyard way to solve a battery problem like that would be to pull a fuse or relay........Backup & double check all the fuse info DS told you to do... If what you say is true.....you're missing something easy....

Re: 98 Taurus, power windows/locks wont work Sign In

I have a 99 Taurus with the same problem. We had to replace the wires that run in a channel in the left front fender. Water sets in the channel and if you bend the wires they break. It worked great after that.
