I have a 98 Tacoma that the speedometer, tachometer and odometer have quit working. It started last year in the fall. I noticed that it would work in cooler temperatures which led me believe it to be a electrical problem. The check engine light came on and I went in to Auto Zone and they told me the error code was p500 and that it was a speed sensor. I bought one over the internet but did not put it on. The weather turned cold and it worked fine, check engine light went off. As spring came this year the weather turned warm and everything started acting up again, so I replaced the sensor on the transmission. Nothing changed, it continued to come on and off and now has not come on today. I went back up to Auto Zone and the same error code P500. When I look around at parts I'm seeing a wheel speed sensor. Is this for a 98? What am I missing? Please Help.

The dead instrument cluster may be the reason your getting the P0500 code in the ECM.

The vehicle speed input for the ECM comes from the instrument cluster. The cluster sends a signal out to the ECM for vehicle speed information. The vehicle speed sensor is wired to the instrument cluster.

You need to figure out why the insturment cluster is dead. You should check power and grounds to the cluster first. Then check to make sure it is getting the correct inputs. You'll need a wiring schematic and volt meter to make your checks at the cluster connectors.

This morning when I started up the truck everything was fine. No check engine light and instrument panel was working fine and continued to work fine. Shut off the truck and got back in about half hour later everything was still working fine for about 5-10 mins then all the sudden tachometer goes to 0 stops working, speedometer needle goes all the way to the right and odometer you can only read the bottom half of the numbers and the ABS light comes on. Shut it off again, start up 5 mins later everything is the same but no ABS light. Even with the truck off the instrument panel is froze the way it stopped working.

It could be the cluster itself. You would have to test power, ground, input, and output circuits going to and from the cluster to determine if the cluster is the culprit or not.

I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma that has had the same issue. Tachometer speedometer and odometer all quit working. It came to life after a couple weeks the first time, but it happened again and would not come back working. I phoned a couple Toyota automotive repair shops and was told that it was either the cluster or the sensor on the transmission. Either one would cost me in the $400 to $600 + dollar range. One day about two months ago I was driving the truck and changed the odometer to the trip odometer, and bingo everything come back to life. Hope it does the same for you.

Thread is old now and now locked. In over two years I hope original poster has problem solved by now. Please don't post on old stuff or on another person's thread unless you have something currently useful for the situation,
