98 Grand Prix Electrical

 I have a 98 Grand Prix GT. My Driver control center that shows the average gas mileage, oil life, which doors are open etc. I bought a replacement at a salvage yard. It flashes zeros on all the actuals. Is there a trick to getting my car to accept one from another car.

I don't have the answer but I'm curious at all get out to find out.
They sure do make the audio systems that won't work without a code for several vehicles but I didn't think the would be for items or the cluster you replaced??
Some thoughts on this:
* Did you get the parts out of the salvage yard or did they?
* Was the car somewhat intact meaning not always being rained on with no windshield in it? I do a bit of junkyarding and when it comes to dash parts I pick my own and try to get stuff that hasn't been soaked.
One more: What was the problem that made you change this out and did it change or is it still doing the same thing as old stuff.
