95 ford escort gt speedometer cable trying to replace instrument panel bulbs Sign In

Trying to remove my instrument panel to replace bulbs.

Got the dash apart. Steering wheel dropped. Screws removed and ready to take out.

The speedometer cable is holding it in. Never done this. Don't know if its supposed to pop right off easily or if there's a trick to it. Tried pulling the cable forward enough to get it out. There is some slack in the engine compartment. The cluster did come forwards me but not enough to see behind it.

I can't feel behind the cluster compartment enough to tell if something is holding it in. I can grasp the cable.

At this point I'm afraid to tear up the whole thing.

There is a spring lock tab that has to be pushed toward the dash cluster to release the cable.

Spot on.
The clip turned and released.

Getting the cable back in wasn't fun. When I finally got the cable back in the clip was a piece of cake. Push and turn, when I heard and felt the click it was a happy moment.

One piece of advice for anyone else. Buy a butt load of bulbs and replace every one, there are a mess of them. I didn't. But, now I see it isn't that big of a deal to do it again.

2 different auto stores said different bulbs. I had 2 types, one from both stores. I know who to avoid in the future. This isn't the first time I got home with a wrong part from that store.

I looked on YouTube to. Not one video said anything about the clip.

Thanks a bunch for the tip.

? There are two types for some cars optional with the holder that twists or just the bulb if that's what it was. Contact there can be the issue,

The bulbs are 194.
Turn the holder counter clockwise pull it out and the bulb sticks in.

No contact problem at all. After I finished everything worked.

The one store sold me a bayonet type.
Probably for something on the exterior. Turn signal etc.
I'll save em and use em later.

I'm sure this thread will help somebody.
Thanks again for the tips.

I don't know what other store sold you. I do know 194 bulbs are so popular for dash and other places they do come two ways. With the plastic mount you push the bulb in or not. If bulb pushes in and makes good contact you don't need the other. That turn and pull and push and turn back in has been around forever for dash especially.

You were right - if there do them all especially at the age,

Live and learn, thankfully I have a good memory.

1445 I believe. (The wrong type)

Speedometer is starting to bounce when I start out.
When I replace the cable I'll buy a mess of bulbs and replace all of em.
I had no idea how many there were. It was a shock when I pulled the cluster out.

Shouldn't be a hard fix on the cable, I've had to mess with both ends of it. Funny, the last time it was the plastic gear thing going into the tranny. The same store sold me the wrong one.

I looked at all of the bulbs. Only 3 were darkened and showing use with 1 burnt out, the illumination bulbs.I had 2 new bulbs. I swapped the 3rd to a spot that isn't doing anything.

Hate to make you go back but cable comes out from dash end w a square end to match to speedo unit. If there, pull the whole thing out and if fine but just dry, lube it. Either speedometer lube (a graphite) or just a slight smear of dialectic grease works well for me and they stop that. Going back in push and feel that cable is mated at other end and will not turn with needle nose pliers.

To be sure for an Escort (FWD only) hoist both front wheels and run car and watch the speedo go (all caution with hoisting cars please) and see it work/spin, put back together and that bouncing needle will be gone. If you find a spur on the cable try to get a whole cable and case. IDK - most just sell cable that you cut and put on a square end and easy to mess those up.

Outside chance it's not the cable itself but the dash but most haven't been to me,

Found the common universal kit. They still stink IMO and much for apt to fail but may be the only choice. Cheap enough just a pest.

Kit comes like this. Note the end you cut cable and squish on end - hack if you ask me but do work if done right...........Pioneer/Speedometer Cable
(0 reviews) Part Number: CA-4001Alternate Part Number: 03720 Warranty: 1 YR
Notes: Universal cable kit. Can be used to repair any speedometer cable under 120" length. Only if the cable housing is in good condition.

Will try. Thanks.

Never knew you could get a kit.

I know the cable is 19 y/o. Same with the geared thing that goes into the tranny the cable goes into.

Well, I'll be doing the bulbs anyway. So no problem.

Don't waste your money on that kit. They are pretty worthless.

Buy a whole cable if you're going to change it.

Yes - any options to get the whole cable and case do so. Ask at dealer or maybe NAPA. Said that the kit you cut the cable and put the end on the cut end. If it doesn't take real well and measured perfectly first time kit is junk right away,
