95 Intrepid to trailer wiring. Sign In

I have no running lights on my trailer when wired to a 95 Intrepid. It's a small home-built utility trailer and I used a 4 pin plug to connect from the car to the trailer. I have hazard (left and right side) turn,(left and right side) brake( left and right side) on the trailer, and hazard, turn, brake and running lights on the Interpid.

Any Ideas why I do not have running lights on my trailer, any thoughts would be helpful. jmarshall@accesscomm.ca

First off make sure that the car end of the trailer plug is wired in properly, by using a test light with the trailer disconnected. You probably already know this but the plugs wiring is left turn & brake yellow, right turn & brake green, parking/tail brown and white is ground. This has been the universal color designation for most four-pin type of trailer wiring.
Ok now the colors of the cars wiring can be a little confusing with Dodge because on some models they used the same socket style as in the color of wires coming out of the back of the socket for both left and right. What you may have to do is follow the harness until you find a connector to see the different colors for left and right brake & turn lights.
What you should find is Lt Green for left turn & brake, Tan for right turn & brake and Black/Yellow for tail/ parking.
Once you have confirmed that the car is ok and the trailer is still not working; you’ll have to work at chasing down where the brown wire has gone open.
Check the bulbs; they’re a dual element bulb, either an 1157 or 2057 and one half of the bulb could be burnt out.
In this picture you can see the two elements through the glass.

Using your test light check if there’s power to the socket if not follow the brown wire forward until you find the open.
Hopefully I haven’t confused you.
Dan.
