94 Neon - Speedometer dies out sometimes

1994 Plymouth Neon 2.0 160,000 miles Hello! I'm a first time forum user here, and I'm pretty much a rookie to the entire "car repair" scene, so including as much detail as possible in your response would be ultra-appreciated! The problem, described in detail: It's pretty simple- so I'll try to highlight the minor details. The speedometer gauge tends to die out on me from time to time. May it be from hitting a rough bump, or just a strong gust of wind coming in front the direct front of the car. ONLY the speedometer dies out. Every other gauge (fuel, temperature, battery, etc) is perfectly fine, 100% of the time. Once the speedometer gauge dies, I have to rapidly tap on the dashboard or the gauge panel (plastic/glass) fairly hard to get it working again. I'd say it dies out about 3 times in an average 30 minute drive. Seems to happen more often when the car/engine is very cold (mid winter). Needless to say it's an electrical problem- but to be honest I'm afraid of breaking open my dashboard without even knowing what exactly I'll be messing with. Any tips or pointers as to what exactly I should look into fixing/re-wiring would be MOST helpful! Thanks ahead of time! -Roo

Are you seeing anny other symptoms when this happens like shifting problems? Is the check engine light coming on at all? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

No other problems occur when this happens. Check engine light has been on since I purchased the car. Nearly 2 years. I was always aware that the car wasn't in great shape when I got it. It's just a cheap "get the wife to work" car. Very much temporary. No serious beatings, no long drives, etc. I think the last time I checked the check engine symbol, it returned with some sort of mass air flow sensor problem. I plan on cleaning my MAF sensor in the next few days. Like I said, it hasn't effected the actual performance of the car.

You're trying to tell me that a MAF problem doesn't effect the performance of the car. Don't bet on that. You can't just ignore that light. It's there to alert you when there is a problem.

Alrighty. I was trying to describe that I've noticed no performance lacking since the MAF sensor was noticed. So about the speedometer gauge?

Maybe you should just keep banging on the dash then.

I have removed your posts of rants an complaints. Don't post attacks again or you will be gone. Sorry for the sarcasm but I really have no patience for people that just ignore all the warnings and problems and suddenly expect us to whip out the crystal ball for a new problem. The check engine light can be very important to alert you to issues that need attention but if you just decide to ignore the light, then when something else goes wrong, you have no clue about it. It would be nice to know if the computer flagged a code for a speed sensor issue for your speedometer issue but since you think it's OK to just ignore it, I don't feel like wasting a lot of time chasing things that may or may not be an issue on a car that is full of ignored problems. Maybe somebody else does.

The last time I looked at it was a week and a half... That's recent in my book. "I think the last time I checked" does not = "A VERY VERY LONG TIME AGO".
