'93 Honda Civic Temp Gauge Not Working Sign In

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me address a simple (hopefully) problem I'm having. My temp gauge is no longer working, but my fuel gauge works fine. I've read they're on the same fuse so the fuse isn't the issue.

I have not overheated, so I'm pretty sure my thermostat is still working. I believe my temperature sensor may be shot which would explain why my fan has never turned on and the temp gauge does not move.

Is there an easy way to verify my thermostat is working? I may trying hooking up 12VDC to my fan to make sure it's working as well, but I'm pretty certain it's my temp sensor that not triggering the fan. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: '93 Honda Civic Temp Gauge Not Working Sign In

I'm not sure on your application..but this pic shows 3 different sensors/switches.
Coolant temp sensor for the computer.
Coolant temp sensor for the radiator fan.
Coolant temp switch/sending unit for the gauge unit.

Hard to believe that the vehicle is not overheating with the fan inoperative!!

This is for the 93 civic,1.5 engine...
Here is a way to test the sending unit/gauge....

1. Check the no.15 fuse in the under dash fuse/relay box, 10 amp
  1. Ensure ignition switch is in Off position, then disconnect yellow/green wire from coolant temperature sending unit and ground it with a jumper wire.
  2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
  3. Check as needle of coolant temperature gauge starts moving toward H mark. Turn ignition switch to Off position before pointer reaches H mark on gauge dial. Failure to do so may damage gauge .
  4. If pointer of gauge does not move, check the following:
    1. Blown fuse in under dash fuse/relay box.
    2. Open in yellow/green wire, yellow or red wire.
    3. If fuse and wiring are satisfactory, replace coolant temperature gauge.
  1. If gauge is satisfactory, inspect sending unit.

Re: '93 Honda Civic Temp Gauge Not Working Sign In

Jim,

Excellent summary and diagram, thanks. I will troubleshoot tonight after work.

In regards to not overheating, my only explanation was my driving is 95% highway and I never sit in traffic. Perhaps the natural airflow when going 70 cools the radiator sufficiently (enough)?

I'll report my findings tomorrow!

Re: '93 Honda Civic Temp Gauge Not Working Sign In

I had trouble distinguising which was the temp sensor and the temp sending unit for the gauge since my wire color scheme was slightly different. I tried jumping each to ground and saw no movement in my gauge when turned the car ON. However, I did manage to blow my ECU fuse.

If I'm reading your notes correctly, the temp sensor will tell the fan to turn on and the temp sending unit moves the gauge in the cabin. Since I have not overheated (since noticing this problem several weeks ago), is it possible that my temp sensor is good - turning on the fan - and that my gauge is bad due to my temp sending unit?

Thanks for the help!

The temperature sending unit for the gauge is probably the culprit.
This should have a single wire to it.

It looks like its next to the ECT sensor.

Click here...should look something like this!

Jim,

Thanks for the help. I was able to download the entire service manual and finally locate that bugger. I verified my gauge was working by grounding it and also checked resistance of the sending unit and compared to the temp/resistance curve in the manual. That checked out as well. I tore my dash apart and sprayed some lube into the gauge and that has fixed the problem! Who would of guessed it was just a stuck gauge??
