'92 GMC Suburban 2500, 454, Won't start when hot Sign In

So my truck has 130k miles on it, and won't start when the engine is hot. Not just warm from driving around the block, but hot, like if I trailer the boat somewhere. I turn the key, no click, no noise, absolutely no response at all. If I sit there with the hood up for a bit, 10-15 min, it starts right up and runs smoothly, like there was never any problem at all.

Got it nice and hot to the point where it wasn't starting, then climbed under it with a test light. The wire from the battery to the starter is hot like it should be. The wire from the ignition got hot when the key was turned, so it seems like this is working also. Changed the starter just for fun, still got the same problem.

The battery is new, new starter, the grounds all seem to be in good shape, brand new thermostat, engine is running at a normal temperature, and now I'm pretty much baffled. Any insight?

Take a real good look at your cables .If you have side post batt, check for blue corrosion at ends. Try this to eliminate cables .With batt cables off put smalll bolts on terminals of batt. Hook up set of jumper cables to hot post on starter and ground cable to starter case. hook other ends to batt bolts ,neg last . Run to problem temp and try restarting .If it starts get some new cables.

If this problem still occurs after you have followed RT's test, you are probably experiencing heat soak in your starter. Do you have headers on this or is the exhaust stock? Either way, there are some inexpensive heat wraps and shields made for your starter to isolate it from the exhaust heat. Some parts stores carry them, anyplace that sells speed parts will have them as well. Easy to install and about the only fix for the heat soaking. You will need to do the specified test to see which is the case, as nothing is going to work without good cables.

Your so right nick . Even if the cables are replaced, a quality thermal wrap will definitely help in the dreaded big block heat soak dept.

Thanks for the input everybody. It may be a few days before I get the chance but I'll check those cables and then look into a heat shield. I'll report back after.

So I tested my wires, everything is working. Bought a heat wrap and put it on there around the starter and solenoid. Drove the exact same route I did before when I had issues, turned off the engine, and it cranked right back up. I'm so happy. Thanks again for the help.

I hope the wrap will be enough. When I get the chance to trailer the boat for a long haul and really load up the engine I'll see how effective it really is. At least now I know what the issue is and if need be I can install a heat shield.
