91 f150 turn signals work until i hit brakes Sign In

hello, i have a 91 ford f150 lariat. i just took it to have it inspected and it failed. it failed because when you turn the blinker on and hit the brakes the brake lights come on and the turn signal stops blinking. so if i hit my blinker to make a turn and i hit the brakes the turn signal stops flashing. its dose this with both left and right turning blinkers. the brake lights come on when i hit my brakes and the blinker stops flashing. any ideas? i have already had a mechanic look at it. but i don't think he really did anything with the truck.

?? Do either work properly if one at a time either brake lights or turn signals? Third brake light working?

Correct bulbs or have they been messed with? Socket condition.

One more. Trailer wiring can be involved especially if hacked in/wire tapped or just anyway - worth a look there too if applicable,

Make sure the hazard switch is all the way off. If it is half way, it will cause those symptoms.

okay revision. when i turn my blinkers on (ether one) they function properly. and if i hit my brakes by themselves the brake lights works properly. but when i turn my right blinker on and hit the brakes at the same time, the blinker stops blinking. also if i turn my hazard lights on and hit my brakes the hazards stop blinking and the brake lights, light up and stop flashing. if i do nothing while the hazards are on they work. but not when i hit my brakes. so basically if i hit my brakes while i have my right turn signal on or my hazards lights on. they stop flashing and and only my brake lights light up.

There might be a problem in the turn signal switch because the brake lamp and rear turn signals are on the same circuits after switch. It can't be a short in circuits after the switch because if you turned on the left or right turn signals both left and right rear lamps would be flashing at the same time. There has to be some type of short in the switch allowing the turn signal circuit to make contact with the brake lamp circuit.

I know this is a cheat and I am sure you don't want to go through the process of confirming the switch is the culprit using a volt meter/test lamp and jumper wires. You could get a replacement switch and plug it in to see if that solves your issue. You just have to unplug the old one at the base of the steering column and plug the new one in. If it is the problem, you can have the joy of going into the steering column to replace the old switch. If it isn't the problem, you can just return it to the store.

It is also possible that a bad ground for the brake lamps could cause that. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to inspect the ground under the hood on the left side of the upper radiator support. Make sure that it is clean and tight. As Tom stated if this has trailer wiring adapter, inspect that wiring really good also.

I like DS's idea and also not ready to just blame that so quickly.

The trailer wiring thing. Lot's of junk get thrown at the wires back there even if OE equipped with a plug ready to go and unused?? Lighting gets grounded from a truck bed to frame as lights are on bed sheet metal da-de-dah and grounds always something to consider. Use your noggin but can add ground at a test with jumper wire or even jumper cables just know you are only going ground metal to grounded metals. FYI, entire frame should be ground, not so with rear axle, exhaust and more unless on purpose,
