This car was from the south so the body is good, that's why I bought it. Has a swapped 04 impala base engine in it. The previous owner retained the wiring harness and alternator from the 2.8 that was in it.I noticed the amp gauge would move from half ways to just above it occasionally. Also It would get an intermittent miss when the gauge would stay on the middle mark. The other owner also had speaker wire (4 gauge) run from the output on alt to the pos terminal on bat. Is that correct? Anyway the alt failed so I replaced it with a new on I found on ebay. It had a one wire connection so I installed the new one the same way except adding the jumper to the "s" pin around to the out post. Started the car and the gauge went to about 16 volts for few seconds and fell to the one fourth mark. needless to say it is not charging now, so what's next? Thanks, BR

!!!! These two cars and engines aren't compatible that I know of for any chance of a properly operational car - all functions, features from an '88 to an '04 engine controls and info for lots more than a charging system are unlikely to operate as a usable vehicle without some pretty serious adaptations if not pre-designed to do this already will be endless problems. Have you ever been able to drive this mix of generations of controls and it drive and shift properly at all? Bet not.

With speaker wire used for wire for anything doesn't give me much confidence that much was taken seriously about this attempt at all never mind the alternator.

What you really need to do is find out if any pre-designed harness even exists to do this at all?

The wire that probably just burned out on you was possibly a fusible link wire now all wrinkled still not the whole picture.

Hope another will chime in but think you probably have two different things worthy of parting out, a body for parts for the Cavalier and if good an engine for the Impala.

You could make alternator work but don't think you can make a realistic car out of this combination that can be used,

Well 4 gauge wire is more than enough to handle the alternator output.

EBAY alternator??

Why did you put a jumper from the output lug to the S terminal? Which alternator are you using? The alternator for the 04 3.4L is turned on and off by the PCM. Sounds like you have a Frankenstein.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
