81 MB No head light and I work at night... hlp me save my job plz. Sign In

1981 MB 300sd diesel Mileage unknown.

Ok, started with no headlights early this morning but had high beams still. After all my troubleshooting the high beams were gone too, but I could still hold my high beam/blinker lever back and get high beams. As I continued to hold this though, that too stopped working. I have done a lot of swapping of parts because I'm desperate with my job on the line. I can't drive in the dark and I work at night. Plz help if you can.

Here is what I've done so far.

1. Checked for any blown fuses.
2. Swapped out every relay. (don't know the right one.)
3. Changed the light switch and now I'm not clear if all the wires are in the right place. Need help with this if possible? Anyone know of a diagram?
4. Changed the column switch.
5. cried like a little girl.

When I changed the light switch the brights stopped working so I may have a wire out of place. I don't know what else to try but I need to make sure all the wires are in the right place so I can put it back together.

I should add that the first position on the light switch works, the second works, the third is off, the fourth works and the fifth only has the parking lamps with no head lights.

I work nights so I could really use the help. Thanks in advance.

Links aren't allowed here and our professional data bases don't go back that far.

Ok, I can understand that. Can you help with this then? I changed out all the relay's, checked all the fuses, Changed out the switches (one that turns lights on and the turn signal switch that controls the high beams. After this the brights stopped working too. I found you could put them on by holding the turn signal switch back. (used a lot to flash high beams.) I rigged the thing to always flash the brights by sticking something behind the lever so it couldn't relax, but now I need to try and fix it for real. If you could help me?

Does this give any clues as to what is happening?
