56 VW Fox - rear lights intermittent after dented boot

Hi
I have a VW Fox Urban 1.4 , 56 plate. I reversed it into a metal gate last week. This dented the boot fairly badly on the right hand side between the reg plate and the right rear light. Lights not damaged (on the face of it) at all, however since then the rear lights (when I have headlights or side lights on) only work sporadically. When they're on they're on but 50% of the time they don't turn on at all. The front headlights work fine as are all indicators, brake lights and reverse lights. I can't see what is different when they do work.
I took it to the garage today who ran 'diagnostic tests' on the electrics which found nothing wrong. I had to pay £60 for this. Drove the car away this afternoon only to find the back lights didn't come on this evening! I've dropped it off again at the garage tonight. Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts - I would have thought a wire had come loose from the denting - but should that have come up on the tests?
Thanks in advance for any advice - I don't want to pay more money for nothing!!

"INTERMITTENT" If it was working and not something obvious it wont be easy to find.
It's damaged. Wires near damage and could be out of sight could be pinched or who knows exactly to you are right there. Hope you can get "boot" open and look yourself.
There's no one way damage is always going to be the same but since it began with this that's where I'd be looking. Could be well hidden and need to take things apart to see or any testing??
