2008 Highlander - severed cable under car, driver's side

After a winter storm, I noticed a chunk of ice hanging from my car. When I went to kick it off, it didn't budge - it had formed on what appears to be a severed cable that's now hanging from my car, on the driver's side very near to the edge. I'm trying to figure out if this is important or worth fixing, but I don't want to pay a dealer to look at it. Any help on identifying this cable and its purpose is much appreciated! Here are some close-ups I took: http://imgur.com/ZRSSkJ3 http://imgur.com/m2rKTvt http://imgur.com/i4VTQ6q

Looks like maybe a parking brake cable. When you hit the parking brake does it do anything or just bottom out the lever easily? Would help to have a pic from under the vehicle showing where this is going to.

I don't know. That looks like it might be a wire for something. Is there anything aftermarket that would have a wire running to the back? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Going off the 1st picture, I figured Nick nailed it, that definitely looked like a cable housing... The 2nd one looks like it has some type of electrical connecter..... Is there anything that doesn't work anymore????? If I had to guess (and I do) I would say it's the wiring for your running boards

Yep, you are absolutely correct! Stupidly, I haven't tried things to see what isn't working anymore. As I got out of the car this evening, I checked the running boards on the driver's side - sure enough, the lights weren't lit. Now I just need to figure out how to replace the cable. Thanks for your help!

The other end of the broken wire will be there somewhere. You will probably have tp replace a section of wire and this time make sure it is securely attached and protected from the elements.
