2005 chevy malibu V6, roughly 175-190,000 miles. Routine oil change and all fluids checked regularly. Battery is only a year old. It was parked in May 2022. About 2 weeks ago, we recharged the battery because it was dead and occasionally drove around town to get the battery back up to good condition. Sat for a few days and now the car will not even try to turn over. All the lights come on like its supposed to. Dashboard lights all come on at startup like normal, nothing flickers. But when key is turned to start motor, theres nothing. Not even clicking noise. We checked all fuses and rechecked battery. Thats all good. I am thinking it may be the starter but not sure. We have had problems with squirrels chewing wires but I dont think they would have had time. We have barn cats. I wanted a 2nd opinion and maybe some other things to try before buying a $200 starter. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Know that "flooded-acid" batteries if for any reason go "dead" = no reaction it can kill them new or not, right away, partially you said it could run on some other power like the battery pack. Try that again, charge up the battery pack fully are "sealed lead-acid" take more abuse usually.
Rodent damage is unique, a short something may be ON that shouldn't be??
IDK but it's NOT the starter you could while hooked up see it trigger wire gets power at all to nail this down better.
Look for damaged wires or it could just do this all over again hope to see ends or wires by color or a chewed off one. If a clean cut see how far a chewed one reaches if anything there to work with - hope so,

The very first thing you have to do is determine if the battery is any good. Having it tested is the best way but for quick answer turn the headlights on and the try to start it and see if the headlamps go out when you try to start it.

Side note matters? You said you had "barn cats" so this is unusual - ancient history now - don't feed the cats or they don't hunt. Not my game grew up around assorted barn animals owned things with engines - they didn't bite me when not looking!
Damage from this suks testing a battery isn't a sure bet DO NOT JUST TRUST A "GREEN" LIGHT on some stupid device. Hammer's headlight trick is telling + other things.
BTW don't go by just dash bulbs they take the power of a wrist watch battery to light don't be fooled by those alone,
