2005 Chevy Cavalier Gauge Issue

Hello, I have a 2005 Chevy Cavalier LS Sport. Up to 60K miles havn't had a single problem. A couple weeks ago, my engine temperature gauge started acting funny. Before when I turned on the car, the needle always jumped up and then back down to the current engine temperature (normal). Now it jumps up, but doesn't go back down. And even after turning the car off, it does not go back down at all. Needless to say, after 5 times or so of turning the car on and off, eventually the needle went all the way around (its only a semi-circle gauge) and now its stuck at what looks like a bit from it having made a full circle (its sitting a bit under the minimum temperature).
As of last night, I took about a 100 mile drive, and I noticed the speedometer was reading lower than what it felt like I was going. Sure enough, as I slowed down for a small town, it was down to about 10 MPH when I was surely still going at least 35MPH. As I left the small town, it stayed near 10-15MPH when I was clearly going about 60MPH. Not soon there after, as I was still driving about 65MPH, it finally bottomed out at 0MPH and even went a bit lower than 0 MPH.
1) Are these two problems related?
2) Is this a common enough problem to know what it going on?
3) Any tricks or techniques I could try myself before getting it serviced/repaired?
4) If not, any idea how much it costs to get something like this taken cared of?

I haven't seen any problems on these cars yet. On the older Chevy's, when the speedo started acting up and the speed sensor checked out O.K., it was a computer and its software going bad. All I can say is call the Chevy dealer and ask them if they have any service bulletins for your car to see if the PCM needs to be reflashed with the latest software.
