The truck is a 4 dr. Sport model with a 3.9 liter, 6cyl 4WD, auto trans. My friend and I found the supplemental electric radiator fan un hooked. He tried to rig power to it directly from the battery, the fan does work, but he heard a click (short?) coming from the fenderwall, passenger side. I now have no cruise control, and it seems to be shifting differently and at 60 mph, it's running at 1800 rpm. All I've tried was to unhook the negative terminal battery feed, wair 5 min., then put it back on. No change. Please help

You are just erasing valuable codes disconnecting battery. "It's shifting differently" and no doubt defaulting to not working from improper trans inputs.

Codes may help.

Other is if battery is right near all the fuses, relays check for corrosion there and fix right. Don't be jump wiring fan either - fix what is wrong,

Also check all your fuses in the PDC.

Thank you tom,
my friend is a "shade tree" mechanic...yet very good. I'm very ignorant about any vehicle beyond '84....too many wires, hoses etc. You mentioned codes...what would you suggest as the next step to take for a fix?

1)remove any 'modifications' done to the aux fan circuit,
2)Check all fuses - in cab and under hood
3)SCAN for codes... yes even if the CEL is off.

That is all free quick and easy- except for New Jersey.

let us know 1,2.and 3.

PS code scans are FREE at autozone, advance & orielys parts stores...

You can get free code reading at most major parts outlets and more - ask and get #s and post them. Trouble with screwing with wiring is fans, shifting and all are controlled by computer. If jumped just wrong you can blow some HUGE bucks - don't is safe.

In the mix this thing knows how fast it's going and if anything wrong designs are frequent for default to NO for especially "toys" like cruise but something isn't right.

Do remember codes and the places that do that for free are there to really sell parts not fully diagnose the thing. It can tell you the area or circuit with a problem not the item(s) good or bad to replace.

Basic DIY w some experience is just rule out lousy connections anywhere and vacuum leaks. Wiggle test wiring/vacuum hoses can show problem if engine idle changes and so on. At some point you really need help as equipment would out price you for better diagnostics never mind likely experience of a pro tech.

Helps to know when it's more than you can handle with what you have and can do,

Kev2,
I can't thank you guys enough for your advice!!
1. No modifications to the aux fan
2. All fuses checked, all fine
3. Unfortunately, at the auto parts store, the gentleman knew about as much as I. It DID show all's fine...hmmm I may try O'Reillys tho

Thanks Tom,
My next course is to check all the vacuum hoses, etc. I didn't share this as it's irrelevant, but my buddy replaced the fan clutch before the mishap. I believe now that the hose to the c control diaphragm may have been damaged?

Thanks to the experts for their advice. The problem was the vacuum hose to the transmission relay module (?), mounted on the fender wall, passenger side

Never underestimate the degradation of vacuum hoses and their connections. Hose is relatively cheap to do more or all as need be.

Glad you found it and it's fixed. Will close as solved to keep the spammers away. You may ask any moderator to reopen the thread,
