Does the check engine light come on when you turn the ignition on?

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

have replaced cam and crank position sensors, did a resistance test on coil pack, with in ford specs, question - the spark lead wires to coil com from the pcm, could a bad ignition switch cause problem? how would I check the switch? could a bad shift position{ neuteral, park} switch cause this issue?

I deleted the other thread you created. Just keep your answers on this thread please.

You didn't answer the question about the check engine light.

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

No codes for KOEO test or no communication? Looking for the check engine light is because the PCM is what controls the light and it turns on the bulb at the key on to test it. The bulb could also burn out, but it is a good test to see if the ECM is actually powering up.

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

As Nick stated, making sure you have a check engine light that comes on when you turn the ignition to on means that the engine controller is powered up. That means the EEC relay is being turned on.

Another trick on a Ford is to crank the engine and make sure the check engine light goes out. If it doesn't, that usually means the engine controller isn't seeing an RPM signal.

Which engine does this have?

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

The red/light green wire at the ignition coil connector should have battery voltage on it with the key in the on and start positions.

You should have battery voltage on the red wire at the idle air control motor connector with the key on and start positions.

You should have battery voltage at one of the injector connectors on the red wire with the key on and start positions.

Is all that true?

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

How are you making your checks? With the connector plugged onto the injector and your meter back probed or with the injector connector unplugged and your front probing?

How about the coil's light green/red wire?

The IAC motor sits right on top of the intake next to the EGR valve underneath that black cover .

Good...that is how you check circuits. I like that.

How about the coil and IAC?

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

OK...IAC should be alright.

You have power, but your missing control.

This is where it gets complex because when you have no ground control on the injectors or coils by the PCM, you usually start checking your inputs. That means you need to make sure that the PCM is getting cam and crank signals. Now supposedly the PCM is getting a crank signal because the check engine light is going off when your cranking on it, but to verify you would still need to make sure it is getting those signals from the position sensors.

The complex part is normally you would need to use a lab scope or graphing meter to see these signals. If the signals are reaching the PCM, the PCM has good powers and grounds, you have 5 volt reference at certain sensors, and you see battery voltage, but have no ground control at the PCM's connector for the coils and injectors than it is looking at needing a PCM.

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

Just because you replace them doesn't mean anything. Why did you replace them? Did you test them and determine they were bad? You could have a wiring issue or something funky going on with the signals that they produce. That is why testing those circuits at the PCM connectors and verifying those signals are reaching the PCM and those signals are correct and in sync is so important.

Hate to see you replace a PCM to find out you had EMI or circuit problems. Seen that happen so many times it isn't funny.

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

Electromagnetic interference

I don't know anyone that can check a PCM unless you take it to an electronics repair shop that specializes in that or you install it in another vehicle, reflash it, and see if the other vehicle has the same symptoms.

The way us drive-ability techs check to see if a PCM is bad is by process of elimination. We test everything outside the PCM: inputs, output, powers, communications, and grounds at the PCM. If everything is there that the PCM needs, but the PCM doesn't react by controlling some type of circuit, the PCM is the only thing that could be causing the issue, so it gets replaced. I can tell you right now you can be thorough making sure everything is there, but never be 100% confident that the PCM is the root problem. You just raise your odds greatly that the PCM is the culprit when you do thorough testing. That is how we fix cars for a living.

It is kind of like doing computer repair work if that relates. You get a computer in your shop that won't turn on. Do you replace the motherboard or the CPU and hope for the best? Or do you unplug all your devices, check for powers and ground from the power supply, check to make sure the board is sending the signal to power supply, the power button functions, you have power from the wall outlet, ect before calling the customer with an estimate on what it would take to repair his puter?

Sorry for the long spiel. Just trying to save you money and heartache.

Re: 2001 ranger no spark Sign In

at this point I feel it is beyond my abilities. I do appreciate your time. The vehicle is worth about $3,000, can't afford another or a big repair bill. Once again thank you
