What do you mean by, You checked the alternator?

It's charging or it isn't.

the bench test indicated 13.9 volts at the auto parts store, but in the car it is not charging. a friend just told me about an excite wire that a basically kicks on the charging. I believe it has to do with the amp light in the cluster not working.

Unless info wrong this is too easy to test on car but if you lack so much as a voltmeter and an incandescent test light you're screwed.

OK - pic is upside down but it's even in ENGLISH!

Does the charging light bulb check when you first turn the ignition on?

The charging light comes on when the regulator grounds the lamp circuit. Check for 12 volts on the light green/red wire at the alternator connector with the ignition on. If you ground that wire, it should cause the lamp to come on.
