2000 taurus won't start - can't get aux to turn off Sign In

I have a 2000 ford taurus. I went to start it and it wouldn't crank.
I then pulled the keys off and found that the auxilary will not turn off. (Radio, windows, etc) all work without key in it.
I was told to try a new ignition switch, so i purchased one and installed it. I still can't get the aux to turn off. (i didn't expect it to start because new key hasn't been reprogrammed).
Please any ideas?

Do the radio, windows, etc. go off when you open the driver's door after removing the key from the ignition?

The old key has a transponder inside it, does your new key have a transponder built into it? You can tell by looking at the key head.

Did you change the ignition switch or the lock cylinder? The part where the key goes into is the lock cylinder. The ignition switch is down on the steering column.

Thanks for the reply discretesignals:
The radio and everything does work after I open the door and the key is out of the ignition.
The old and new key does have a transponder in it.

I know that i will have to have ford service take care of that to start the car (if it is indeed the problem). but does that have anything to do with the Aux?

I changed the cylinder I believe. i pulled the whole piece out with the key and all and installed a new one in its place ($72 oreilly)

The part you changed wasn't the ignition switch. That is the lock cylinder. The ignition switch is bolted to the steering column under the dash.

The GEM or body control module controls the delayed accessories function. Those things are supposed to turn off when you open the driver's door after turning the ignition off. Might need to do some electrical checks to see what is going on with that.

If you hold the old key up near the bottom of steering column near the lock cylinder, the engine may start with the new key. If not, you'll see the theft indicator rapidly blinking.

OK, thanks for that info.

When i attempted to start with the new key (I tried to hold the old key up to it) the theft light did blink rapidly.

It might be confused because it could be seeing the new key and the old key at the same time. If you are going to keep the new lock cylinder, you'll need to have the new key programmed. There also could be a fault in the system, but you would need someone with a high end scan tool that could communicate with the GEM to see what is going on.

OK, thanks for your help. I'll get it to someone to get it programed
