2000 Dodge Dakota, 4.7 V8, over 100,000 Km
The 'CHECK GAUGES' light comes on intermittently. As soon as it comes on, the voltmeter gauge drops to zero from a strong new battery reading; the temperature gauge flicks all over and the truck dies right now. Walk home and come back later, and it starts up again. When you get home, you sure don't feel secure in taking it on the road again. The shop checked it and of course there was nothing wrong when they had it Where do I start the troubleshoot? Is it computer or...? Should I just go and get a computer from the wreckers or after market parts, and give it a try or is there some logical sequence to follow in troubleshooting the electrical? Is there other components that are often suspect?

You may have issues with either the ignition supply voltage or the dash cluster. It will have to be looked into deeper starting at the ignition switch and moving through the circuit.

Check for codes stored in the PCM. Write down the numbers.

You really have to do your troubleshooting when the vehicle doesn't want to start after it stalls out. Check for spark, fuel pressure, and injector pulse. The results from those tests will give you some direction.
