1999 Lexus LS400 Sunroof moves an inch then retracts Sign In

Hello, I recently bought a 1999 Lexus LS400, 4.0 V8 5-speed automatic. Everything in the car works perfectly except for the Sunroof. When I push the button to open it, it will open about an inch, then close back about an inch. It does the same back and forth motion when attempting to close it as well. The car sat for a long time, and had a lot of residue (it looked like crushed peanuts) in the tracks. I used some compressed air to spray it out, but it didn't help the sunroof's behavior. The motor seems to be working fine but perhaps the track is not lubricated properly or is hindered by debris? I didn't want to open it again to try to clean it until I talked to someone about it. It also will not close all the way, and must be pushed by hand to close it tightly (though still not set the way it should be). Any ideas or suggestions?

You need to inspect the track and make sure that all debris is removed. The sunroof controller can detect if the motor catches and will reverse it.

I removed all of the debris that I can see, but I wonder if there is more on the track but underneath the roof where I can't see? Is there a way to get in there and clean it out?

You might be able to blow the track out with compressed air. What ever may be causing an extra load on the motor will cause it to reverse.

So I used a compressor and cleaned the whole track as best I could, still reverses itself though. Would posting any videos or pictures of the roof help to possibly figure out what's wrong with it?

Maybe, but there is a lot of service information. Just to get to the motor/ECU assembly you have to take a whole bunch of trim off including the headliner.

Tests would have to be made on the motor and limit switches. Track transmission and cabling would have to be inspected.

If you are really interested in trying to repair this yourself, your going to have to get hold of service information and have a basic understanding of how to make electrical checks on switches and motors. The mechanical portion of the sunroof is basically all visual inspection.

Yeah that's probably out of my skill range to remove the interior etc. I cleaned the track as best I could, with compressed air and a tube, and some lubricant to see if it would go. Still does the same thing, moves an inch then retracts. I suppose I will have to take it in to a shop at some point, thanks for the help though.
