i have a 1999 ford escort wagon that will start and then it dies after letting it warm up at an idle for 5-10min. I have replaced both the alternator and battery. When running the the voltage is reading a little under 10 volts, seems like the alternator may be faulty. The check engine light has been on for a few years constantly, now the battery light is intermittent, the check engine is due to a knocking from the engine. When i first changed the alternator and battery voltage read fine on both the alternator and battery tests between 13-14 volts. What baffles me is it starts up just fine after it sits for an 24 hrs and then it will die. i have not done a fuel pressure test. when it starts to die, the engine pulses from a high idle to a lower idle then it kills itself, which leads me to a fuel issue. What are suggestions i should do? grounds, wires and connections all appear ok.

And you're surprised you have issues?

You need to have the codes read first and then resolve the charging issues that may or may not be a faulty alternator.

ok codes dont help me, just says running rich, aka the knock, not a problem for me. the issue is the electrical bug.

how do i diagnose the charging issues? when new alternator was put in voltage read fine on both battery and and alternator tests as did the car. the knock isnt the problem

please be more specific with your responses on charging issues and troubleshooting

How do you know? You haven't checked it in ages.

Tell that to your catalyst. They don't like running rich. Have you verified the voltage at the battery with a multimeter or are you going by the gauge in the dash? Do realize the dash gauges aren't always accurate, especially after 15 years of use like your car.

Do you have a multimeter? You're going to need one to troubleshoot this.

Codes ARE a problem, and if you want this to run right they need to be repaired. If you keep your car in constant disrepair don't expect it to last long or ever be reliable. Get it scanned and post the exact code numbers.

yes 8if used a multi-meter on both battery and alternator, battery read 12.6 volts before startup, turned key on voltage still read over 12, turned all lights/electronics on still read above 12 volts constant no drain. started car, voltage reading 9 volts under 10 volts on Alternator test grounded to battery post with meter. voltage regulator bad should read upwords of 13 volts running.

however, what else could cause the voltage to drop like that other than alternator regulator being bad? this is my problem and why the car dies. all wires, coonectors, and grounds are intact and good.

OK, it's apparent that you have your own ideas of what the correct way to approach the problem is and you are not listening to anything said here so I am going to close this now.
