The battery charging system failed while driving, and I limped the van home. I replaced the alternator but still no 14 volt charge. The input plug connector to the alternator has one pin, which reads 12 volts. The output lug of the new alternator showed less than 2 volts when running. I thought this new rebuilt part was defective, so I installed another alternator -- still not charging battery. I checked every fuse in box under the hood and under the dash. I couldn't find a fusible link in the alternator output wire but there is limited access. Where do I turn to next?

See if you have battery voltage at the main terminal with the key OFF

Sorry for the delay. While trying to determine if I had voltage with the key off I discovered that the lead from the alternator to the starter was broken in two. I stripped and cleaned the ends, butt spliced and I'm back in business. Thank You.

That's a fusible link that burned out. Make sure you didn't substitute regular wire for that.

Thank You. I didn't realize there was a fusible link at the starter end of this wire, it appears to be covered with a heat shield material but kind of mangled. Why the stranded copper wire broke clean above this point is a mystery, but it was heavily corroded, and probably kinked for a long time. I bought this vehicle used and it has a replacement starter. So, I'm going back under to replace the fusible link and strip wire back to where there is no corrosion (butt splice, solder and heat shrink)
