If you didn't put the same battery back into the car, what kind of battery did you put in it? Make sure you have the correct group size battery in it and your battery connections are clean and tight.

There is a computer inside the instrument cluster that is incharge of the operation of the pass lock system. You'll probably need to take it to a shop that has a scan tool to interface the instrument cluster's computer to see if there are any trouble codes being stored. The code(s) may give you direction in resolving your problem.

Don't take the instrument cluster out you'll need to tow the car to a shop that has a high end scan tool, the whole car needs to be there

Try a 10 minute relearn on it to get the light out....

Turn the key to the on position and let is sit for at least 10 minutes......This may get your sec light to go out.....

The light is not flashing. That's likely a hard code.

That is very possible and then it would need to be traced down.......But I've had a few of them, my own personal being one of them, where it started fine (not always at 1st) but the light was always on solid & the 10 minute shut it off...

I'm probably one of the few guys who's wife know's what a 10 minute relearn is & how to do it......(Now I never said she was happy about knowing how to do this)

Why don't you just do a bypass then?

Re: 1998 chevy cavelier security system problem Sign In

No......They both work fine now.

The 1st was my daughters 98 cavelier, her bf broke the ign sw (long story), when I put the new sw in I did the 10 minute to get it to start, which it did but the light was on...I did the 10 minute again and then the light went out.....

On my wifes 05 Grand am....The sec would disable the starter & you would have to do a 10 minute relearn to start it. It never did it when I drove the car, just when her son or she would drive it.... After about a month of my phone blowing up everything it stranded her, I finally looked at it.....It never failed for me so everything always looked good.....I tested the battery last, which failed.....I put a new battery in it and it has never done it since.....After I put the new battery in it, the sec light was on solid but it always started and the doing the 10 minute shut the light off.....
