ok i have a 95 chevy z71 pick up truck. the problem i am having is when u get in to start it u have to hold the key in the start position for about 45 seconds before the starter will engage and crank over the motor. sometimes after driving it for a while it will fire right up but not always. anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with it?

OK - High chance on this: The hidden eyelet connections of battery cables at the battery first thing to totally check, clean up, grease or replace ends as needed.

What happens that will do what you experience is request for starter is heating up right at the weakest spot and can finally be enough to connect well enough to engage starter. Any can do that but moreso with the GM side posts. Can confuse you more as if exactly that jumping it doesn't work all the time either.

Any vehicle and style you need to tend to battery, its connections at both ends and proactively prevent corrosion or testing anything else will be in question.

To do now on this: There's one bolt and a plastic block thing holding this battery in place down low. That will easily bust right off trying to get a battery out if not purposely greased (the bolt) and not make your day. PB (power blaster) is a great penetrating spray to help NOT break that from top side and under if you can get at it then let it work a while.

For next start till you can check this and clean it up anyway many of those with this symptom if you just twist a bit by hand on cable as it is now will start up first try or bust it so bad it becomes the job right away but need to know anyway,

I had the same issue, with 5.7L it would start if it was cold, then it would have to work very hard to turn over but battery was fine. New starter fixed the issue

20 year old vehicle and not your thread or specifics. Please don't post on another's thread with YOUR fix especially since OP hasn't responded in a few weeks already this thread is about done that fast with no response,
