1995 Ford Contour SE O/D light Sign In

Hi, just recently bought a 1995 Ford Contour SE 4 door sedan, 2.5L 24v DOHC engine, automatic transmission. 100k miles on it. Owned it for 6 months, no problems yet save this one.

Two days ago, the O/D overdrive on/off indicator light came on and will not go away. I've inspected the wiring in the stickshift all the way down to the wiring harness and found nothing wrong. Even went to the extent of clipping a temporary bypass lead in place of the O/D button in the stick itself in case there's a break that I cannot see. No results.

I've looked in the consumer-level service manuals and Motorcraft's tech service section pertaining to any TSB's that might relate to this. Nothing rings a bell.

Short of taking it in for service, would anyone have any knowledge or experience on a problem like this. Anything I might check myself. Might not even be an electrical problem... ?

Many thanks for any help.
D

The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is in control of the transmission functions and when you push the overdiver button you are actually putting in a request to the PCM to either turn it off or on.
So I think you’re going to have to have the PCM scanned to see if there are any code(s) that deal with this problem.
It may not have anything to do with the transmission as to why the overdrive isn’t being allowed to function.
Just for example if the engine coolant sensor is slightly out of range, not enough to turn on the check engine light but enough for the PCM to think the engine is either to cold or hot to allow overdrive.
That example is kind of reaching out there but you won’t know until you’ve had it scanned.

Dan,

Thanks for the information. It looks like we are leaning towards the same thing (a bad sensor).

Doh... reading my first post again, I just realized that I omitted an additional detail related to the very example you used.

The low coolant light came on, and stayed on, the same day the OD light problem started.

It seemed too coincidental that both the coolant light and OD light problems showed up at the same time. The engine isn't running hot with in-town driving (we're on our 3rd consecutive 100 degree day here right now) and I see no drop in the coolant bottle level at all. I'm assuming that if hose(s) to the radiator from the overflow bottle themselves were blocked and not allowing a completed loop, it would be running hot.

Thus, I'm guessing the coolant bottle sensor itself.

I'll take the advice and just go get the codes read, and come back with a follow up on what I find out. Again thanks...

CERTAINLY be sure your coolant is properly full. 50/50 mix is almost universally the recommended mix. You can pay a touch more and buy it pre mixed. Watch out for the testers - many are dangerously wrong! Avoid using straight anti-freeze as it doesn't cool well. If you find it low you need to investigate that at once!

If ok - when warmed up (use a glove or towel) upper radiator hose should demonstate that it's holding pressure and that's a good sign, -- exception is a bad head gasket that will/can pressurize system in no time but you'd be having problems if that were the case. T
