1986 Chevy 4x4 will not start with new battery
|
|
|
I have an 86 Chevy 4x4 that I am having some electrical trouble with. I put a new battery and terminals in it back in Dec. Up until last weekend I haven't had any issues, but Sat before last I was leaving walmart and when I went to start it the dash and radio lit up like normal but when I tried to crank it, it just clicked. A nice older man parked beside me jumped me off and I drove home. I charged the battery and put it back in Sunday and everything was great until this past Sun night. I went out to crank it and the dash and radio had power but it just clicked again when I tried to start it, and then the power to the dash and radio went out. So, I charged the battery again and put it back on yesterday, tried to turn it on and the same thing happened. The dash lit up but only a click when I tried to start it and then the dash went black. Now, it wont even jump off. This has really got me confused. I checked the battery and it is fully charged and there is no corrosion on the terminals. Could it be a bad ground? The ground wire does look frayed and I can actually see hte wires in one spot and they look pretty bad.

It appears that you changed/charged the battery 3 times and still no one has tested the charging system to see if it is working. That would be your next step. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for replying. I changed the battery in Dec and only charged the battery 2 times and that was over the past week. Last week I charged it and it cranked right back up. This past Sunday was the only other time I charged it and nothing happened when I put it back in the truck. I tested the battery and it is still fully charged. The dash and radio will come back on if I remove the terminals and replace them back on the battery but as soon as I try to start it everything goes black.

You have a connection issue somewhere, probably in the battery cables.

I checked all the connections and everything looked good. Could a bad ground cause problems similar to this?

Just as important as power. You can't have an electrical circuit without both.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turned out to be the ground. I replaced it and she fired right up!
