I got my first car/truck a few months ago. The first few weeks were hard, but I got it running reliably and smogged and registered. One day I used it, the next, it's dead.
I'm working with a
1980 ford courier truck
4 cilinder, 2.3 liter, manual transmission
Milage shows 34k, but I highly doubt it with the age of the vehicle.. I would guess 3 or 400
The first thing I did, because I still needed to get somewhere, was roll it out of the driveway and pop/clutch start it on the way out. When I got home, I tried to start it and no good. No turning over whatsoever. The dash lights go on, and die when I turn the key. When I leave the car with the key in the on position, the dash lights stay on, I step on the brake turning on the brake lights, dash lights die and slowly dim back on after I take my foot off the brake.

After some fiddling, I charge my battery. The battery was replace along with other repairs just over a month ago, so that shouldn't be the problem, but I could be wrong. After charging the battery, voltage reading about 13 volts, I attempted to start the car, same problems. I charged the battery again, and began pulling fuses, looking for a short circuit, and with there being maybe 7 or 8 fuses, it didn't take too long. However, I wasn't able to find a definite short or draw with the ground terminal disconnected on any of the circuits. During repairs, the headlights went out and I spent days trying to find the break, but to no avail, so I resorted to hard wiring connections onto the headlamp nearest to the battery, so that I could tap into the current harness, and put in line fuses and toggle switches on the dash. I realized that the problem could be my error in wiring something incorrectly, so I disconnected the headlamps at the fuse, but it didn't seem to change anything. I'm not even sure if it is a short in the system, and that it may just be a faulty battery, in which I will replaced it under warrenty.. I was however able to get the vehicle started after some work, but I'll have to come back and see if it stays that way.

First, you need to stop with the creative wiring.

Start out by having the battery tested. once confirmed as a good battery, check all the cable connections and test the charging system.
