Charging light came on intermittently. For about two weeks. Seemed to come on spontaneously then go off with a braking movement. Then one morning it behaved as if the battery was dead. Starting solenoid clicking, etc. . Recharged it at an uato shop and an hour later a load test showed it was at 63%. Replaced the battery. Seemed to work fine for a day. The next day ... I used the car and towards the end of the day the battery appeared to to be low again. Funny clicking sounds for the instrument cluster, lights were dim, crazy warning signals come on and off; check breaks, air bag, etc. turn signals weak, heating/cooling sys wouldn't come on. Then the engine died.

Haven't checked any fuses or the charging system. Could the battery be draining through a short? Or is it some tiny disconnect, split wire, connector, wiring harness, etc. that's behaving badly..
How do I dope it out. What and where should be checked next?

First step when diagnosing a charging system fault it to have the battery tested and to make sure your connections are clean and tight. Once you know you have a good battery and connections you can proceed with testing the charging system.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Lead acid batterys used everwhere hate going dead and kills new ones quickly. So don't trust a new battery for a while but you are not charging properly or have a substantial parasitic drain.

That is done with a meter on battery watching and taking out fuses to just find which circuit is the problem.

Only so many things stay empowered with a vehicle shut off. Brakes lights, cig lighters and power ports and things like trunk, glove box lights that must go out and you don't always know it.

If not charging that's problem ONE then find out where this drain is quickly.

Alternator will self destruct getting too hot too much with dead batteries, once is enough sometimes. Look right at the plug to it, bet it's burnt or the main wire shows heat exhaustion now.

All must be right or you can end up playing Ping-Pong with batteries, alternators.

For the second at least make sure belt it tight and in good shape,

T
