Speaker Break-in Period?

I swapped out the factory front door speakers in my wife's Cavalier with a pair of $100 Pioneer 3-way TS-A4670Rs speakers. Even though I'm using the original AM/FM/CD factory stereo I thought there'd be a tremendous improvement in sound. While it is some better, and I can crank up the volume higher without distortion, the improvement is far less than overwhelming.
Maybe they'll get better with use. Do speakers need a break-in period? Also, they were installed in cold weather. How much does temperature affect sound quality?

if you replaced your speakers there should be a noticable improvemet immedately. no break in period or anything. it doesn't really matter if you install them in cold weather or warm. from what i know. i'll give you a hint though. change your radio. sounds to me like you have a problem with an internal componet on your radio. if you don't want to do that i would take a speaker out and test it on another radio. if that sounds better. then you know it's the radio. try that and let me know what it does

I don't know of any breakin period as Darrin concurred. If It's 40 below zero where you are I would forgive anything in a car!! T

A speaker's sound quality is only as good as the deck that drives it. You may need to get a graphic equalizer or a small amplifier to boost sound quality. A lot of factory radios don't have internal pre-amps and are useless with high performance speakers. The factory usually matches the speaker to the deck. If you want a real thumping bass or just like waking the neighbors, you need to make big changes in the entire entertainment center.

Thanks fellas. Since I don't really know what I'm doing, this is the first time I've removed a speaker never mind swap out a dashboard radio, I think I'll play it safe for once in my life and quit on the front speakers while I'm ahead. I've got the Cavalier hidden over at my sister's as it's a Christmas gift for my wife. Of course a couple of days after I buy it she's telling me how Cavaliers are "chick cars" and she doesn't like them! But she's driving a '92 Topaz. I'm sure she'll change her mind when she sticks her foot in the 140 hp Ecotec, as long as the car's got a half decent stereo.
I think the situation is, when I got the car a week ago the speaker in the driver's door didn't work so I can't really compare then and now. The sound I'm familiar with is the factory stereo that came in my 2003 Silverado, which has 2 speakers in each door plus 2 in the back. The truck's radio has more buttons and sound adjustments so I assume performs much better than the stereo in the Cavalier.
What I think I can do is swap out the rear speakers - I can get at them easy from the trunk. If I get good base from the rear (not teenager earth pounding thumping) I think the sound quality will be up to snuff. We can get a better stereo later on - which will make sense if the speakers are good quality.
So, final question - what rear speakers (6 x 9) would you recommend that would match the front Pioneer 3-way TS-A4670Rs? I saw a pair of Kenwood speakers that normally retail at $150 on sale for $60. Can I mix brands or do I need to stick with Pioneer?

you can mix and match if you want. me personally. i love pioneer impp's. there a performance speaker but they sound good and might coast alittle. i think about $129 for 6x9's. my second fav would be kickers or kenwoods. they are all good speakers. if you wanted to you can hook up a 100 watt graphic equalizer. if you have a pawn shop in your area i'd check them out first. some times you'll get a good deal. read your wattage ratings on the side of the box that the speakers come in. there should be a recomended wattage and a max wattage. try to keep your speakers around the recomended watage. the radio in your car might be around 50 or 60 watts x4. meaning it's getting around 12.5 watts to each speaker. if your putting 100 watt speakers in there then i'd give it a boost. maybe a 100 watt x4 equalizer. therefore giving each speaker around47.5 watts. lot better then 12.5.hope this helps. you have fun with that ecotec now.
