I ordered a car starter for the wife's Envoy for Christmas. Do you know how tough the installation is? I installed one in the Venture about 5 years ago but it was a pretty basic model so I'm far from a expert. The one I bought this time is the Viper 5904. know you don't know my skill level when it comes to the electrical side of a vehicle but do you think I could install it myself or do you recommend I have it professionally installed? I can normally figure things out but I'm leaning towards hiring it done because I don't want to screw anything up. What do you think?

So many manufacturers out there I can't keep track of them all. I'd say look through the install manual that comes with it and see if you feel comfortable. I think you can do this job. If you can rebuilt the trans in the Venture, this is a walk in the park for you.

It has to defeat the Passlock system first so I would expect it to be rather technical. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Stuff like the Passlock system, and who knows what else, is what has me leaning towards taking it to a pro for the install. I found an installation manual for the Viper 5904 online and I think I may just take it to a pro. I think I could possibly figure it out but there's nothing worse than thinking you have everything hooked up correctly and then it doesn't work. You then have hours of troubleshooting trying to figure it out. Mechanical is one thing but the electrical system is another, at least for me. I've never really had to do much with the electrical system. Plus, one wrong hookup and who knows what I could fry which would end up costing me more than just paying someone so install it. Thanks guys.

You have to have a data resource to know where all these circuits have to be accessed too. the stereo people have sites just for that and they really don't charge a lot for the installs.

I called a place to install it and just waiting to hear back. It would probably take me at least 5 hours and that's if it all goes well. An installer will probably have it done in an hour. I agree that an installer is the way to go on this one.

I'm glad I decided to have it done. They said it's a 5 hour install job. So, if it takes them 5 hours it would've taken me probably 15+! It's kind of like when I look at alldata before doing a repair. For example, a mechanic would charge 13 hours labor (or 16 can't remember) for the head gasket repair. I know that I need to at least double the time but not get frustrated if it takes 3 times that. That being said, I'm glad I'm taking it in to get it done.

I got it installed yesterday. I couldn't find any local business or independent in my area to install it so had to take it to BB. It was a younger kid who installed it but I could tell he really knew his stuff. I think I probably could've at least got it in but there's no way I could've done the programming. Due to the unit I got you have to have a special handheld computer to just set the time limit on how long it will run before it shuts down. You also have to use the computer just to flash it to the specific vehicle. This one wouldn't been way over my head and I didn't have the equipment to do it all. Not sure if the wife is quite worth what it cost to install though! (just kidding, luckily she's a keeper)
