96' Nissan Maxima with Bose stereo problem

The Bose CD/Tape player in my '96 Nissan Maxima is no longer playing CD's. Before it stopped working it would work intermittently. After that it would make scratchy distorted noises when it would work, and now it won't play CD's at all. It gives me a CD read error. The radio and tape players still work fine. Should I give it to someone to repair, or is there some fix I don't know about? I'm happy to crack it open and fiddle with things if necessary. Thanks.
