So my antenna got pulled out by a tree, and now (as the mechanic that looked at it and wants 400$ for, the gears are shot.)

So as a result I can still use the radio, albeit at a smaller range than originally, but whenever I turn the car on or off a very loud, very annoying, but temporary grinding noise emits from the gear box that moved the antenna up and down.

I want to get rid of the noise.

I use an FM radio transmitter with my ipod to listen to music, so how can I disable the noise and retain use of my ipod?

I've found the box that contains the antenna, but I'm worried that if I completely cut power to it the ipod system will no longer work, has anyone experienced this before or thoughts on what I should do?

There should be 2 separate plugs going to it. One will be round coax which is the antenna lead. leave that. The other plug will be the electrical supply for the power antenna. Unplug that one. Don't just cut the wires as you will cause a short doing that.

Thank you. How should I get to it? Just remove the outer shell piece?

EDIT for clarification: The box is in between the engine compartment and the outside shell piece. I can see it if the front passenger car door is open, its about 6 inches inside, but my arm wouldn't be able to get to it.

You will probably have to remove the inner fender well to access it.

You could just replace it with a fixed mast too.
