Hello friends,
As you can see, I'm BRAND spanking new to this forum (I still have my original cellophane packaging!) :)
I have a 2004 Nissan Quest that has the DVD system. It does not have the Bose system.
A replacement radio for this vehicle hovers around $800 and I cannot afford to do that so I'm hoping there's some soldering/repair work I can tackle instead.
Anyway, here are the issues: - More often than not, the radio will not work - will not turn on, will not put out any sound.
- Occasionally, it will come on, but will not put out any sound (dash display shows frequencies, mode, etc... just will not put out any sound). Then while driving after a while, the radio will randomly come back on.
- Occasionally, it will come on but only give a consistent frequency level (pitch) screetching sound, no matter which mode (am/fm, cd, etc...) it's in.
- Occasionally, and more often than not, I will start up the van and the CD that was in it previously will spit out and the unit will have reset everything - as if it completely lost power (all radio presets reset, etc...).
I have no idea where to start with this one - could all these issues be linked to one problem? Can I simply re-flow the board to fix this? Will a transistor or IC need to be replaced? Where should I start?
If this is not worth the effort, I do have an aftermarket radio I can use, but I'm wondering if when I replace the radio with aftermarket, will it render the DVD system inoperable?

#1 would be to check but better to replace the fuse to it. Loss of total power and total reset suggests it does jus that - loses all power. Yes could be elsewhere but a fuse can go intermittent,

Check owner's manual for fuse location which could be marked or a number location most likely INSIDE the vehicle.
Appears to be this one...........Bussmann/Fuse(0 reviews)  Part Number: BP-ATM-15-RPApplication: Without Bose stereo system

Notes: 5 ATM fuses (15Amp). Fuse in passenger compartment

If you have a test light when it's down check this while in place that power is present when the unit should be on. Disregard fuse at the problem if so.
Rare side but that hoop you see can have a flaw much like a light bulb that you might have had you bump it and might work for a while.
On the search noticed there are some pricey ones for this for fusing! Better get a test light. 12v test lights are like a scratch awl with a pig-tail with clip to ground and handle lights up. $5-10 bucks should do for just that type.
If and can't know there is some anti-theft control aftermarket or OE for this to kill the stereo/entertainment items I can't know. Would think it wouldn't come back on ever if really controlled like that.
It's that it forget presets that makes me think just plain loss of power. Most fuses that fail plain blow, look dark or obvious that the hoop in the pic is burned out as it's supposed to.
Many vehicles come with spare fuses and a puller in the box that contain them. Check and ONLY use exact AMP rated fuse always.
If you find it blown it never should come back as they don't heal if really blown.
Start with this and not think whole unit is messed up quite yet and doubt you are going to fix anything inside it without intense details of what to test where for what. There are places that do that worth it for most if only a one time fix if needed,

After removing & evaluating both Audio fuses (15a inside & 20a in engine bay), both appear to be in working order and both have continuity.
The problem persists.
the majority of the time now, I get absolutely no sound from the radio. I cannot operate it, and it will not come on (audibly), nor will it show a display on the HUD. I can push a disc into the slot and the unit will accept the disc, but still no sound.
On other occasions, I will get sound but am completely unable to control it - for example, it came on with the family in the car and it was much too loud and I could not turn it off. I was forced to remove the fuse to get it to turn off.
On yet other occasions, the only sound I'll get is a constant buzzing sound (but not like the noisy cassette tape buzzing - more of an electrical buzzing) coming through the speakers.
It seems the unit is receiving power just fine from the power source, but there seems to be an issue with something inside the head unit - power supply or transistor, or something of that sort - maybe a capacitor?
How do I go about methodically testing the suspect components inside the head unit?

We don't repair anything internal. Replace the radio.

i'm not asking for anyone to repair it - I'm asking for suggestions on where to start on the internal portion of the radio.

This is not a solid state repair website. We don't have access to the internal radio schematics. You should find a forum that specializes in something like that.
As technicians most the time we make sure the device has power, ground, good inputs, and good outputs. Then we either replace the component or send it off to business that repairs electronics.
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
