06 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Stereo Replacement Woes Sign In

I recently purchased a Sony XAV-AX150 to replace the factory JBL A56832 in my 06 Highlander Hybrid Limited (no navigation.) Unfortunately, the wiring has been a struggle. The harness kit I purchased listed my vehicle year and make as compatible, but the pin sizes and counts are incorrect and do not fit. I tried to bypass the harness and haphazardly splice directly into the car wiring and figure it out through trial and error and ended up blowing the fuse in the new stereo (lesson learned lol).

The new stereo provides a color chart for its wiring in the manual, but I’ve been unable to find a color chart or diagram to correctly identify the factory wiring in my vehicle to correctly match them up.

If anyone has any knowledge of the stereo wiring for this year and make or can point me to a relevant diagram or color chart, that would be greatly appreciated because I’m currently stuck and at a loss how to proceed.

I’ll provide the following photos for reference.

A) The back of the factory JBL radio.

B) The wiring from the new stereo needing to be spliced. (Fortunately, the manual provides a color key for those wires.)

C) The factory wiring harness and three inputs that plugged directly into the factory radio. I’m assuming the 20-pin by my hand are the wires I’ll primarily be splicing to.

Final disclaimer: I am clearly out of my depth and in over my head. I’ll happily eat humble pie for a botched job, but I respect and appreciate the knowledge you all have and look forward to your help.

I had to delete your last picture because it was way too large for the thread. You can use the image hosting software to reduce the size by 50% and repost it.

As for cutting into the wiring harness, NEVER a good idea. My best advice is to repair and return the factory harness to original and find the correct install kit for you particular radio.

I can get you a factory wiring diagram for your car but that will just get you into more trouble.

Thank you for the speedy reply! It’s greatly appreciated. As for the photo, I understand and that’s fine.

I genuinely do appreciate your best advice. And like most good advice, it sounds like a small headache now to prevent a large headache down the road.

I would like to at least take a look at the factory diagram if that’s something you can provide. Im already pretty deep in the snips and its a long road back lol.

And I’m still not sure why the harness kit associated with that particular year and make wasn’t a fit. And I’ve had others with more knowledge on the subject than myself take a look and confirm that. Maybe it uses the same components as the one with the navigation option, even though mine lacks that. Not sure at this point.

Do you have the 6 speaker system or the 8 speaker system?

It’s the JBL Premium setup, so I’m assuming it’s the 8-speaker with a tweeter and lower door speaker on each front door and two behind the grille on each back door, although I haven’t taken the rear door panels off to confirm that.

Messing with this wiring can get you in more trouble than you can imagine. It has data transmission lines into the computer network and you can do a lot of damage real easy.

Yeah, I think your initial best advice is where I'm landing on this. I’ll find and order the correct harness kit, replace that fuse, and work on repairing the factory harness in the meantime, to be ready when the kit arrives.

The only challenge remaining is finding the correct kit to order. Any recommendations there?

Make sure you do a good job at splicing those wires, solder and heat shrink.

As for finding a harness, just contact radio supply sites. Somebody should have the right one. I suspect the issue on the first one is which stereo system you have in the car.
