oil in coolant reservoir, oil usage ! Sign In

I have a 2003 Chevy Impala, not sure engine size, approx. 52,000 miles.

Bought car approx. 4 months, ago, with 48,000 miles.
When checking oil, noticed using oil at a rate of 1/2 to 3/4 quart per month (approx. 1000 miles per month). Also noticed coolant changing color from orange to dark brown or black in color. I have not noticed any coolant in oil.

Does this mean a blown head gasket or crack in block ?

Car has a six month, 6000 mile powertrain warranty from dealer.

I assume this would be covered under such warranty ?

Any suggestions on how to procede ?

Is car worth fixing ?

sure sounds like some of the indicators of a head gaskt, manifold issue, etc* - You want to get this checked and documented ASAP.
Hopefully this was a AUTHORIZED or licensed vehicle dealer.

*different engine may have different issues BUT a serious indicator for all engines.

They are telling me there is a blown intake manifold gasket.
Would that account for the oil in coolant and excess oil consumption?
What little I know makes sense to me, I didn't notice any coolant in oil, which would be a blown head gasket?

Thanks for your help.

On certain engines the intake gasket can give those symptoms. I think the 3.1 is one of them. The 3.8 had a problem with the manifold itself. Taking it apart is the only way to find out.
