noisr from near right rear wheel of 2004 Saturn Ion Sign In

My 2004 Saturn Ion has a longstanding (six weeks) clattering noise from near the right rear wheel. I have had the tire checked, the car inspected (state inspection), and the sway bar bushings repaced ($230)--all to no avail. The noise sometimes vanishes for a day or two. The noise only occurs when I go over a bump. Sounds like part of the car is about to fall or fly off. Nothing is hanging down from the chassis. The noise is not connected to the steering mechanism--only bumps. The noise sounds somewhat like fifty bottles being emptied at the recycling center--only more metallic. But it does not sound like steel or iron--more like tin.

Why were the sway bar bushings replaced if the noise is in the rear?

Did you take it to a shop that put the vehicle in the air and inspected the rear suspension and components in the rear of the vehicle? How about the exhaust system? Is the exhaust system banging around from broken hangers, heat shields rattling around, or muffler coming apart?

I know now that replacing the sway bar bushings was a waste of money--I'd had it down on the left side about a year ago to fix another noise, so I went alomg with the mechanic's advice. I am going to take it back this coming week--although muffler and exhaust problems are a possibility, I rather doubt they're the problem. I'll certainly have them check it. To me, something to do with the suspension seems most likely. I read over many of the posts on this site, and someone who had a roughly similar problem mentioned loose parts in the brake drum. There don't seem to be any problems with the brakes, but is it possible? I'm just searching for ideas.

It's a possibility, but you can easily check that out by removing the drums and inspecting the components inside.

In case this happens to anyone else: The mechanics at the Saturn place found the source of the problem--a snapped spring in the brake drum on the right rear wheel. The spring is actually an eight inch piece of metal shaped like a horseshoe and is about a quarter inch in diameter. Cost $80 to fix.

Glad you got that figured out. Thanks for the follow up. I wonder what caused that to break? hmmm.
