My car is a 1998 Dodge Neon 2.0L DOHC 16 Valve 5 speed.

Recently, my car has developed a grinding noise while I'm driving. It makes it all the time as long as it's rolling and sometimes, the noise will go away for a little bit but it comes back. About 2 weeks before, I thought my clutch had gone out, it didn't work at all so I had to drive the car without the clutch which probably was not the best idea. But one day, I pushed in on the clutch pedal really hard and the clutch sprung back to life and became functional.

The noise then developed about a week later. Now when I drive the car, the clutch works properly but when I am down shifting, I have to speed match to the gear I want to downshift to. So if I'm in 5th and want to downshift to 3rd, I would have to slow down to 25mph. This does not apply when I am upshifting.

I was told the grinding noise is most likely a throwout bearing but I just wanted to be sure before I got the part. Also, my check engine light is on but it is because of the "camshaft sensor position". And i wanted to ask if anyone knew where the camshaft sensor would be located in my car. I can not find it. I have found a few things that I thought may have been it but I know that there is also a crankshaft sensor and I don't want that I want the cam sensor.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: I just ran my OBDII Sensor yo discover that there were 2 other codes. 1 for the 02 Sensor volts low and the other was EGR Flow insufficient. I also forgot to mention that my car has been dying randomly. Sometimes it won't start and sometimes it will. And when I'm driving it will die sometimes.

It is probably going to be more than a clutch release bearing. If your going to go in there to replace a bearing, you might as well do a clutch job and replace the rear main if you plan on keeping the vehicle. You could have a hydraulic issue, clutch release bearing issue, or a mechanical problem with the pressure plate. Someone is going to have to be there to diagnose it.

What is the trouble code number for the camshaft sensor? Seen many leak out in to the connector. Usually replacing the sensor and installing another pigtail is the solution, but you would need to do some testing to confirm that.

What are the trouble code numbers you just got?

Maybe you should start with the clutch and then work the other stuff later.
