brake grinding...Why Wont My Brakes Work :(??? Sign In

My brakes on my 2002 VW Passat recently started grinding and providing very little stop resistance when I applied the brakes.

I changed the front pads and front rotors, and to my surprise the rotors and pads were not in bad condition. When we went to bleed the brakes [“applied brake when bleed valve was open and retract brake when valve was closed”] the pressure in the break system was lost after approx. 6 cycles of bleeding even though the fluid reservoir was full and cap was off.

We determined the issue was the master cylinder. We replaced the master cylinder BUT WE FORGOT TO BENCH BLEED FORCING UNWANTED AIR INTO THE LINES. After bleeding the front drivers side caliper the brakes were once again pressurized. We continued to bleed the brakes at all 4 calipers on the car until no air bubbles were released from the lines.

When we went to test the car the brake pedal had an unreasonable amount of resistance, and applied an extremely SMALL amount of breaking force. Couldn't drive 15 mph and stop at a stop sign.

NOTE: when replacing pads on front passenger side the piston in the caliper could not be fully retracted, even when we used a massive C-clamp [“piston retracted but pushed back out after removal of C-clamp”], causing the pads to scrape the rotors. scraping was happening before the pad change but is much worse with thicker pads.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THE BRAKES DON’T WORK???????

AND DO I DEFINETELY NEED A NEW CALIPER ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE?????

Thank you very much in advance!

If a c-clamp won't push in you caliper piston, you obviously need a new SET of them. You replace brake parts in pairs or you will have uneven brakes. Your caliper is likely seized or the rubber hose going to it is internally collapsed.
