beetle stopped working at a red light!

I have a 2002 Turbo beetle. I was at a red light waiting on the light to turn. When it did, I took my foot off the brake and put it on the accelerator to go. NOTHING happened. The car was still running, and in drive, but pressing the gas did nothing. It didnt even rev up like it had accidentally been in neutral. also the battery light was on. Finally just turned the car off and cranked it up again and it worked fine!!
Any thoughts??

Have the computer scanned for codes. Sounds like a problem with the electronic throttle system.
