Wheel bearing worn? Sign In

Last week (about 8 days ago) I accidentally fishtailed my car around a corner (I've got a 2001 acura integra). I didn't hit anything, but since then my cars been acting wonky, and started to get worse. The first signs were somewhat sudden, and then from then on it just started to get worse.

Sites I've read suggest it is most likely the wheel bearing, because on the drivers side it feels very gritty (sitting in the passenger it is much less noticeable). I can hear it too, a low sorta grumbling. Its constant while I'm driving.

Two mechanics test drove it today, but the first said he didn't really notice anything but said it could be the wheel bearing. That surprises me because it is VERY noticeable now. Second mechanic also said its most likely the bearing. Neither could say for sure but said I should drive it around some more and if it gets worse to bring it in. I didn't quite understand the purpose of this. I think it was to avoid getting charged unnecessarily to check it and find out its not that.

Are the symptoms for this common to other problems or because I have these does it almost certainly mean it is the drivers side front wheel bearing? I had my brakes all checked out and they were fine. I thought it might have been my hand brake pushing slightly on the car, but one used it while driving and it wasn't the same feeling.

Any help? I really appreciate it.

just some ideas you might think about: If it sounds gritty the rotor or brake pads may be rubbing in a different area after your incident,or the pads could have come loose or the linings on them could have broken. I can't imagine how the wheel bearing could fail so quickly unless there was some obvious physical damage, but replaceing them may be a cheap option to eliminate any unknown in that area, if there is enough damage to the wheel bearing it could ruin the spindle, (A lot more expensive to replace ) have you checked the emergency brake cables? they should only affect the rear wheels anyway.

Noises can be very difficult to diagnose. The louder and more pronounced it gets, the easier and more accurately it can be diagnosed. That's why they told you to drive it until it gets worse.
